DVD Rentals
While the name-brand rental chains persistently charge $4 or more to rent new releases, the “mom & pop shops” are only asking $1 to $2.
Also consider DVDs by mail from Netflix and Blockbuster. In exchange for a monthly fee, movies are mailed to your home. After viewing, simply place the DVDs in the pre-addressed, pre-paid envelopes provided. The postmaster will return it, so you do not have to. You can keep the DVDs as long as you want. No more late fees.
Assuming you watch movies as soon as they arrive, and that you mail them immediately after that, you can expect four or five movies a week, using the three-movies-at-a-time plan; which comes out to approximately $1 per movie. Most of the time, this is cheaper than your local DVD rental store.
One downside of the original concept was that if you suddenly felt like watching a particular movie, you could change your movie list, but it will still take a few days before you receive it. Lately, this problem has been taken care of by some stores. They email you e-coupons every month, each entitling you to a free DVD rental from any of their store locations.
Therefore, you can satisfy your spontaneity occasionally if you would like to, by driving to a nearby participating store. If you feel the post office is too slow, you now also bring back your DVD’s to the store and exchange them for new ones on the spot, at no extra charge.
